Pros in Public

Same opponents, different ring names, different venue. Jonny Firestorm and Trent Blayze are no longer in the ring at the BG East compound. Now they're in an Elks Lodge in Rhode Island, with a live crowd surrounding an indie Northeast promotion wrestling ring. The wrestlers are announced. Not only their names, but their attitudes are different. Terry Windham, aka Blayze, enters first, his nose in the air, his teeth clenched, contemptuous of the working-class fans who jeer at him. He's an outsider, a loner, so naturally he's the bad guy. Next, "Dynamic" Jon Firestorm enters, one half of the NCW tag team champions. The crowd goes wild. Jonny comes bounding out, slapping outstretched hands. "Let's hear it!" he shouts, all smiles, and the crowd responds enthusiastically. He's with his people!

In an event that is less than a quarter as long as the one in the BGE ring, Jonny and Trent must not only compress story and action but also play to the crowd. Trent/Terry plays up his muscles, sneering down his nose at the screaming fans and his pint-sized opponent. The guy may be one half of a champion tag team, but what is he compared to THIS! The wrestlers circle and then converge, locking up collar and elbow, a meeting Jonny segues into a side headlock. He grinds down, pushing the muscle heel's face towards his knee. But Trent/Terry rears up and tosses Jonny to the edge of the ring. Jonny bounces and reaches for the small of his back as he lifts himself back up on one knee. The crowd vocalizes his pain for him and hisses when the Tennessean strikes a double biceps pose, a presumptuous declaration of victory. Unimpressed, Jonny slaps him across the face.

Trent takes a wild swing at Jonny's face. Jonny ducks under and brings the giant down with a side-headlock takedown. It's a two-count. The heel pulls free and snaps his legs around Jonny's head. Jonny frees himself, springing to his feet. The crowd ooohs its approval of the smooth escape. Jonny reapplies the headlock, then swings around to crank the muscle boy's left hand up between his shoulder blades. Trent reverses. A trio of elbow jabs to the jawline secures Jonny's escape. The outsider backs into the ropes, where Jonny pinkens his tits with a hard slap. An Irish whip, one of the great exclamation marks of professional wrestling, follows. Then Jonny snapmares Trent to the mat and dropkicks the back of his head. He throws his body over the man's chest and hikes up one of the legs for a pin fall. All he gets is two counts, which Jonny argues is due to a slow count.

Jonny pulls his opponent up by the head and plasters his face with forearm smashes. Trent/Terry tosses him over the top rope, which Jonny grabs hold of, just in the nick of time, hikes himself up to grab the big guy's head between his ankles, and yanks him over the ropes to the hard cold floor. No sooner is Trent back on his feet than Jonny flies over the ropes and puts him flat on his back. Then he slugs the guy and pushes him back into the squared circle. He then climbs to the top corner ropes and lunges, but Trent catches him in midair and bodyslams him. Jonny is hurt and slow to get back up and fight.

The differences in storytelling techniques between BGE ring and the indie pro ring are instructive. Almost everything in the pro ring is shorthand for the emotions and actions the BGE ring allows to unfold at a more leisurely pace. Holds are held longer for the video audience, maximizing body contact, but abbreviated for the live (the total match clocks in at only about 8 minutes compared to 40 in their BGE private match!). The histrionics are greater in front of a live crowd, and the attacks are more daring, thanks no doubt to greater free space around the ring and the immediacy of the audience response. Opinions may differ, but arguably both are comparably dramatic and erotic, though in different ways. Same opponents, but what a world of difference! Check out this amazing contrast between two of BG East's talented pros, as they battle in the ultimate Grudge Match.
