Exavier's exacting and excruciating punishment: a knee drive to the side of Greg Garrett's head!

B-B-B-B-Bad!

Here's a useful tip when you need to identify a bad boy in a hurry - bad boys enter the ring and say things like "You got to be joking" as they jadedly eye their opponents from head to toe. The good guys never take their opponents too lightly. Sure, they may roll their eyes a bit - as Greg does as the pimped-up Exavier preens in front of the mirror - but basically they are nose-to-the-grindstone grapplers, watchful and leery, prone to respecting their opposition, if for no other reason than an innate sense of decency and a conviction that, in a fight, it's best to reckon rightly with your enemy's strengths. Bad boys, however, can't help but condescend to their opponents, with an arrogance that's undiminished even when the other guy has put them in a hard place. It turns out that tall and straightedge Garrett knows the ropes and presents quite a bit more fight than Exavier expected. But does Exavier even once pay the clean-cut wrestler the respect he deserves? Get outta here! At one point Garrett smashes Ex's nose flat to the mat and bends his left arm back and up almost to the breaking point. Exavier's response? "Whitey, I'm gonna kick yer ass!"

Here's another clear sign you're looking at a bad boy: When the going gets tough, the tough get going, sure, but the bad boys run and hide. In response to the drubbing Greg gives him in Fall 2, just desserts for Exavier's considerable lip previously, Ex makes for the ropes. Rather than fight Greg toe to toe like a man, Exavier summons all his resources to crawl to the ropes, slither under the bottom rope, and crouch defensively against the apron. "You gotta be kidding me!" Greg exclaims in disgust. But a bad boy has two fight modes - sadistic cruelty when his man is down and, if and when the tables turn, a speedy, cowardly retreat. The only time bad boys say, "Truce," is when they're in an unbreakable bind, and the only time they say, "Let's shake on it," is when they need a man to drop his defenses and open himself up for the next sneaky low blow. Only bad boys backed into a corner get on their knees with uplifted palms and beg for mercy - a mercy, you can be damned sure, they would never show an opponent if the positions were reversed.

Try as Greg might to show Exavier "what being a real pro is all about," the cowardly and smug heel is incorrigible - and that's something you have to respect about a fighter like Exavier: his indomitable arrogance and slippery cunning. His meanness and contempt for everything that makes wrestling an honorable sport have, let's admit it, a great deal of entertainment value. What does that say about us fans? Valiant heroes like Greg Garrett win our respect and often our cheers, but it takes a villain like Exavier to get our juices flowing and our blood boiling - and while Garrett's dignity and heart inspire us with notions of the loftiness of the human spirit, Exavier's dastardly ploys are cosmic magnifications of our own all-too-human foibles. "Every woman adores a fascist," poet Sylvia Plath once wrote, with some alarm, and, we would add, every BGE fan adores a bad boy.
